　　<词语辨析>

　　1. valued；valuable，invaluable，priceless；valueless，worthless (adj. )

　　valued是形容词，意思是“贵重的；受到很高评价的；被尊重的”，同时也是动词value的过去分词。

　　valuable有两个意思，一个是“贵重的，值钱的（worth a lot money）”；另一个意思是“很有用的，很有价值的，很重要的（very useful or worth－while or important）”。invaluable意思是“极有价值的，极宝贵的（extremely valuable）”。priceless意思是“无价的，极珍贵的（so valuable that it is difficult to give a financial value）”。由此可以知道，valuable，invaluable，priceless 三个词意义相近，程度上有所不同。

　　valueless与worthless是近义词，二者都指“无价值的，无用的（having no value, importance or use）”。另外，worthless还可以指“(人)一无是处的，不中用的”。

　　2. deserve doing；deserve to do

　　动词deserve指“应受，应得；值得”，其后可以跟v-ing或动词不定式作宾语，但表达的意义不同。v-ing作deserve的宾语时，v-ing具有被动含义，也就是说，句子主语是该动作的承受者。例如：

　　they deserved punishing. (=to be punished) 他们应当受惩罚。

　　the old woman deserves looking after. 这位老大娘应当受到照顾。

　　当动词不定式作deserve的宾语时，不定式具有主动意义，也就是说，句子的主语就是动作的施动者。例如：

　　she deserved to win because she was the best. 她应当赢，因为她是最优秀的。

　　students brave enough to at－tempt the course deserve to succeed. 凡有足够勇气选这门课程的学生一定能获得成功。

　　【拓展】英语中其他三个动词need、require、want也要求其后的动名词采用主动形式来表示被动意义，这一点和deserve的情况相似。要想表达被动意义，也可以在其后跟动词不定式的被动式。
